Crews working to clean up North Logan oil spill

Emergency crews worked through the night Saturday to clean up an oil spill that contaminated irrigation water in the North Logan and Hyde Park area.

The spill happened Friday evening when heavy rain washed oil into an irrigation canal. The oil originated from a construction project on 1800 North in North Logan, according to Bear River Health Department spokeswoman Jill Parker. It spread 5 miles before crews managed to divert it into a field near Highway 91, where crews spent the night cleaning.

Parker said Sunday morning that the spill did not spread any further overnight.

The contamination could affect farmers and ranchers in the are who use the canal for irrigation. Anyone who sees brown water or notices an unusual odor in their irrigation systems should not use the water, Parker said.
