Texas baseball beats UTA

AUSTIN, Texas ? Junior second baseman Erich Weiss hit a two-run, bases-loaded single in the third to provide the NR/No. 24 Texas Longhorns with the 2-1 non-conference win over the UT Arlington Mavericks at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Texas freshman Chad Hollingsworth went five innings in his first collegiate start, allowing only one run on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

The Texas (3-1) bullpen accounted for four scoreless innings, including closer Corey Knebel, who threw two scoreless innings to earn his first save of the season. Chad Nack (1-1) took the loss for UT Arlington (3-1) after giving up two runs and four hits in three innings.

Hollingsworth gave up a four-pitch walk to start the game with a base hit and throwing error loading the bases with one out. After striking out Matt Shortall, Hollingsworth got Jake Pinchback to fly out to left to get out of the jam.

Codey McElroy made a run-saving catch at first base on J.M. Twitchell?s line drive with a runner at third to end the Mavericks? half of the third and led off the UT third with a double to left. After Matt Moynihan singled him to third, Taylor Stell was hit by a Nack pitch to load the bases. Weiss then laced the two-run single to left field for the 2-0 lead. Shortall tripled in the top of the fourth and scored on Pinchback?s RBI groundout for the lone UTA run.

Knebel would close the door in the ninth with back-to-back strikeouts with the tying run at second for the Mavericks.
