An international team that includes University of British Columbia physicists has used ultra-fast laser pulses to identify the microscopic interactions that drive high-temperature superconductivity.

In the experiment, to be outlined this Friday in the journal Science, electrons in a prototypical copper-oxide superconductor were excited by extremely short 100-femtosecond (0.0000000000001-second) laser pulses.

As the material's electrons relax back to an equilibrium state, they release their excess energy via deformation of the superconductor's atomic lattice (phonons) or perturbation of its magnetic correlations (spin fluctuations).

The researchers were able to capture very fine grained data on the speed of the relaxation process and its influence on the properties of the superconducting system, showing that the high-critical temperature of these compounds can be accounted for by purely electronic (magnetic) processes.

"This new technique offers us our best window yet on the interactions that govern the formation of these elusive superconducting properties--both across time and across a wide range of characteristic energies," says UBC Associate Professor Andrea Damascelli, Canada Research Chair in Electronic Structure of Solids with the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the UBC Quantum Matter Institute.

"We're now able to begin to disentangle the different interactions that contribute to this fascinating behavior."

Superconductivity--the phenomenon of conducting electricity with no resistance--occurs in some materials at very low temperatures. High-temperature cuprate superconductors are capable of conducting electricity without resistance at temperatures as high as -140 degrees Celsius.

The key mechanism that allows the carriers to flow without resistance in superconductors stems from an effective pairing between electrons. In conventional metallic superconductors, this pairing mechanism is well understood as phonon-mediated. In copper-oxides, the nature of the low-resistance interaction between the electrons has remained a mystery.

"This breakthrough in the understanding of the puzzling properties of copper-oxides paves the way to finally solving the mystery of high-temperature superconductivity and revealing the key knobs for engineering new superconducting materials with even higher transition temperatures," says the paper's lead author Claudio Giannetti, a researcher with Italy's Universit Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and visiting professor at UBC's Quantum Matter Institute.

The international collaboration also involved contributions from Japanese, Swiss and American researchers.

U.S. says Bay Area delta's longfin smelt could become extinct

Federal biologists have concluded that another native fish of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta is headed toward extinction, underscoring the region's severe environmental problems.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced Thursday that it has determined that longfin smelt in the delta deserve Endangered Species Act protections. But the finding won't expand restrictions on the delta's water operations because the agency is simply designating the fish a candidate for listing.

The longfin is joining 251 other species across the country that the service deems in peril but that are in line behind higher-priority listings.

The move is a reversal for the wildlife service, which in 2009 denied a petition to list the San Francisco Bay-delta longfins, saying they weren't distinct from other longfin populations on the West Coast.

In a legal settlement with two environmental organizations, the agency conducted more research and concluded that ocean currents and the small fish's limited swimming abilities kept the bay-delta longfins from mingling with other groups, making them a discrete population in danger of extinction.

"It's about time," said Gary Bobker, program director of the Bay Institute, one of the groups that sued the government. But without actual listing, he said the fish's prospects won't improve.

It is not clear what, if any, additional protections would follow listing, since biologists attribute the plunge in longfin numbers to many of the same conditions hurting its relative, the delta smelt, which enjoys endangered species protections that have restricted delta pumping.

Those factors include decreased freshwater flows, pollution from a large regional wastewater treatment plant and an invasive clam that consumes the plankton that are a major smelt food source.

Fish and wildlife officials said mortality at the big delta pumps is less of a problem for longfins than delta smelt and that the seasonal flow requirements of the two species are somewhat different. Bobker said that could mean that additional restrictions on water diversions are necessary to save the longfin.

Distinguished from other smelt by their long pectoral fins, longfins are more tolerant of ocean water than delta smelts and swim farther west, into San Francisco Bay and beyond. They were once among the most abundant fish in the bay-delta system, but their numbers are a fraction of what they were 25 years ago.

Harrisburg finance director says he's too busy to take care of audit ...

Robert Kroboth, Mayor Linda Thompson?s finance director, told the Harrisburg City Council last night that he has too much work to do, and that?s why audit reports for three years haven?t been done.

Kroboth said he has been acting as the city?s business administrator and chief of staff, and has chosen to focus his energies on Harrisburg?s immediate survival.

?Not until we get a business administrator and a senior accountant on board will we be able to address the responsibilities like we did prior to 2010,? he said.

Tracey Rash, with accounting firm Maher Duessel, said she is waiting for as many as 30 forms to do the 2009 audit. She said the majority are standard documents that have been required in previous audits. Rash noted she received several forms from the Thompson administration this week.

Councilwoman Susan Brown-Wilson said the incomplete audits are delaying state and federal grants.

Council President Wanda Williams has asked Rash and Kroboth to attend council?s legislative session April 25

Crema On Top

How Crema Coffee Co. is finding success in a Starbucks-dominated city and industry

by Karen Brochu

There are so many smells, sights and sounds that are associated with coffee. The robust aroma of ground beans, the high-pitched gurgle of steamed milk, and the sight of long lost friends huddled in the corner catching up over a warm mug of their favourite brew. These are the simple pleasures that make up Geoff Polci?s everyday, and they spill into the street with the cool winter air.

After opening his first location of Crema Coffee Co. in the Junction in April 2008, the company has bloomed into four locations around the city of Toronto. Geoff has worked hard to separate his independent caf?s from the large chain coffee houses found on every corner.

?We have a strong focus on the coffee, so we only buy premiere specialty grade coffee from reputable roasters,? Geoff says proudly. Though they do make organic and environmental efforts, such as using recyclable cups and fair trade organic cane sugar in their stores, the focus remains on quality. While Geoff supports organic coffee, he will only bring it into his stores if it makes the grade.

This unwavering commitment to high quality coffee may come from the fact that Geoff and his wife previously owned a restaurant in Costa Rica. There, premium coffee and roasters surrounded him. After selling that business, Geoff wasn?t sure exactly what he was going to do, but he knew it would have something to do with coffee.

Eventually Geoff moved to Toronto and launched Crema Coffee Co. The third location of Crema is found on the Danforth. Several aspects drew Geoff to this particular area of the city. Primarily, he found the area to be lacking of any quality coffee establishments between Broadview Avenue and Pape Avenue. Robyn Urback agrees in the review written for BlogTO, ?[Crema] is filling the void of independent espresso bars on this stretch of the Danforth.? The area is also overflowing with young people, families, and people with a genuine interest in food and drink that, according to Geoff, have a ?more developed palate for coffee? and want something different from Starbucks.?

Being scrupulous about which coffees are available in his caf?s is not the only way Geoff separates himself from ?brand name? caf?s such as Starbucks and Second Cup. Crema features a smaller menu of options as compared to some of his competitors. He emphasizes his preference to do a few things very well, rather than to do a lot of things so-so. Even their baristas undergo rigorous training in order to assure total customer satisfaction. A trainee may spend three to six months behind the register before they are ready to make drinks. All this speaks to Geoff?s commitment to the customer: to provide the best experience, best coffee, and best service to customers each time they enter his caf?.

So what does Geoff, one of Toronto?s coffee elite, drink?

Espresso.

?Once you start drinking really good espresso, it?s hard to drink much of anything else.?

Researchers discover why humans began walking upright

Saturday, March 24, 2012

Most of us walk and carry items in our hands every day. These are seemingly simple activities that the majority of us don't question. But an international team of researchers, including Brian Richmond at the George Washington University, have discovered that human bipedalism, or walking upright, may have originated millions of years ago as an adaptation to carrying scarce, high-quality resources. This latest research was published in this month's "Current Biology."

The team of researchers from the U.S., England, Japan and Portugal investigated the behavior of modern-day chimpanzees as they competed for food resources, in an effort to understand what ecological settings would lead a large ape - one that resembles the 6 million-year old ancestor we shared in common with living chimpanzees - to walk on two legs.

"These chimpanzees provide a model of the ecological conditions under which our earliest ancestors might have begun walking on two legs," said Dr. Richmond, an author of the study and associate professor of anthropology at GW's Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. "Something as simple as carrying?an activity we engage in every day?may have, under the right conditions, led to upright walking and set our ancestors on a path apart from other apes that ultimately led to the origin of our kind."

The research findings suggest that chimpanzees switch to moving on two limbs instead of four in situations where they need to monopolize a resource, usually because it may not occur in plentiful supply in their habitat, making it hard for them to predict when they will see it again. Standing on two legs allows them to carry much more at one time because it frees up their hands. Over time, intense bursts of bipedal activity may have led to anatomical changes that in turn became the subject of natural selection where competition for food or other resources was strong.

Two studies were conducted by the team in Guinea. The first study was in Kyoto University's "outdoor laboratory" in a natural clearing in Bossou Forest. Researchers allowed the wild chimpanzees access to different combinations of two different types of nut?the oil palm nut, which is naturally widely available, and the coula nut, which is not. The chimpanzees' behavior was monitored in three situations: (a) when only oil palm nuts were available, (b) when a small number of coula nuts was available, and (c) when coula nuts were the majority available resource.

When the rare coula nuts were available only in small numbers, the chimpanzees transported more at one time. Similarly, when coula nuts were the majority resource, the chimpanzees ignored the oil palm nuts altogether. The chimpanzees regarded the coula nuts as a more highly-prized resource and competed for them more intensely.

In such high-competition settings, the frequency of cases in which the chimpanzees started moving on two legs increased by a factor of four. Not only was it obvious that bipedal movement allowed them to carry more of this precious resource, but also that they were actively trying to move as much as they could in one go by using everything available ? even their mouths.

The second study, by Kimberley Hockings of Oxford Brookes University was a 14-month study of Bossou chimpanzees crop-raiding, a situation in which they have to compete for rare and unpredictable resources. Here, 35 percent of the chimpanzees' activity involved some sort of bipedal movement, and once again, this behavior appeared to be linked to a clear attempt to carry as much as possible at one time.

Business Advertising: Social Media

Have you ever asked yourself what would people do if social media networks hadn?t been invented? It would be total chaos. Social media networks are considered to be the new hominid interface in the world that we live in today. Almost everything is based on networking sites; you can even document your whole life?s existence on a designated web page. These networking sites are a great avenue to meet and interact with people who are from remote places, share common interests, disseminate information, and can be a tool for businesses to thrive.

Most business moguls find social media networks a great avenue to expand their companies, since it?s the most utilized promotional tool in the internet marketing world today. Social media networks are a great way to advertise your business, as there are millions of people from across the globe utilizing the web.

Given that most social networks are of user-generated content, it?s easier for most people to access the business site and engage in a friendly interaction with the client.

It?s important for a business to have social media as a means of advertising because of the accessibility it gives to potential clients. Advertising one?s business on traditional media such as television, newspapers, or films are somehow archaic and might not even click to various audiences. Also, most businesses advertise on social media networks because of their ability to reach large quantities of potential clients from various places.

Most contractor marketing specialists would recommend having a business advertised on social media networks because of their usability. A person can learn to operate social media networks easily because they offer a user-friendly approach when interacting, as opposed to traditional media which requires training and special skills for someone to be able to fully understand the media content.

Social media networks are instantaneous. They offer quick response to most clients ? if ever they happen to visit the site and comment on it. According to a contractor marketing specialist, social media networks are virtually adapted into handling customer feedback, and traditional media can cause delays.

Some print mediums such as books, magazines, and newspapers are susceptible to errors and are permanent once published and sent out to the market. Wrong information printed cannot be altered, and errata can only be published the following day, according to a contractor marketing specialist. With social networks, you can modify posts and comments. This way, your potential client will get to value you and your thriving business. Giving a look at the beebonds review section

How does one make sure that the purchase he or she makes on an online shopping portal is indeed what he or she wants or needs without seeing the actual product? This is where diligence in checking the item reviews section of the online shopping portal matters. In beebond, every gadgets' and electronics' review are seen on the bottom part of the page when the item is opened. It is here that the previous buyers post their comments about the particular item. Their comments include their buying experience on it, and how the item met their expectations. Some also have written how the item worked for them, how the item looks, and others.?

The good thing about the reviews is that both the positive and negative qualities of the items can be seen here. Rave or positive reviews highlight the best qualities and features of the product, making the buyer see whether it suits his needs.

Rant or negative reviews can give possible areas for improvements for the product. Nonetheless, both kinds of reviews of the gadget or electronic item give the product a face where the buyer can imagine the product with the attributes mentioned in the review. If one utilizes the reviews section correctly, he or she can arrive at a balanced decision on whether or not the item is worth buying or not.?

Aside from opening the page of the item itself, the most recent reviews can also be seen on the left hand side of the beebond?homepage. It gives a short excerpt of the review, the green link for the site visitor or buyer to check on the whole review, the rating given to the item based on the number of stars shown, the username of the person who made the review, and the date the review was posted.

Also, a Most Reviewed tab can be seen in the center of the homepage, so a shopper checking out the site can see the item where the most number of people left their comment. This is a good indicator which item is worth checking out or purchasing.?

If there are no reviews on a particular item, and a buyer wants to make his own comment or review, all he or she has to do is to find the item in the beebonds site and click on the link for the item. Once there, all he or she has to do is to click on the Customer Review tab and write his or her comment on the product.?

Checking out the reviews section of the beebonds portal is a good and helpful way of arriving at a buying decision for online shopping.

The Worst Jobs For The 21st Century
Brian Wingfield, 10.09.07, 6:00 AM ET

Health care, education and financial services--if you're looking for work in the coming decades, these are the fields to get into.

What to avoid? The usual suspects. According to the projections by the U.S. government, manufacturing jobs are expected to decline by more than 5% by 2014 as production moves overseas. Same goes for textile workers, such as sewing machine operators, who will see a 36% drop in employment. Technology will kill off more office positions, such as file clerks. They'll see a 36% drop in their ranks by 2014. Digital cameras will zap the manual photo processing industry by about 30%. And that guy who comes around to read your electric meter? Expect to see a lot less of him, too.

But these are the obvious victims as the U.S. moves from a goods-producing economy to a services-producing economy. More interesting are the jobs that are likely to experience slower than average growth (average being about 13%). This is where the surprises are.

In Pictures: The Worst Jobs For The 21st Century

Like computer programmers. Despite all the advances--and expected job growth--in the computer industry, expect the number of programmers to increase by about 2% between 2004-2014. Why? Outsourcing. Americans who want a career in this field should find a specialization, like cybersecurity.

Another endangered species: journalists. Despite the proliferation of media outlets, newspapers, where the bulk of U.S. reporters work, will cut costs and jobs as the Internet replaces print. While current events will always need to be covered (we hope), the number of reporting positions is expected to grow by just 5% in the coming decade, the Labor Department says. Most jobs will be in small (read: low-paying) markets.

Radio announcers will have a tough time, too. Station consolidation, advances in technology and a barren landscape for new radio stations will contribute to a 5% reduction in employment for announcers by the middle of the next decade. Even satellite radio doesn't seem immune from the changes. The two major companies, XM and Sirius--which now have plans to merge--have regularly operated in the red.

Anyone who regularly books their flights online can tell you why the travel agent business is in jeopardy. So here's a surprise: The Department of Labor only predicts a 6% drop in travel agent jobs by 2014. The demand for luxury and specialty travel, and increased spending on tourism, will buoy the industry somewhat. If you do plan to be a travel agent, best to find a niche field or specialize in specific-destination trips. Travel agents might also find success in organizing groups of foreign visitors to their home markets. But remember, the travel industry is highly connected to swings in economic conditions.

Worse off? Federal employees and their amazing benefits. Washington employs nearly 2 million people, not including the military, making it the country's largest employer. After Sept. 11, 2001, it expanded significantly due to homeland security needs. But those days may be coming to an end. By 2014, federal government jobs--excluding the Postal Service-- will only have increased by about 1.6% above 2004 levels due to the transfer of some jobs to state and local governments and the increased use of private contracting companies. Don't believe it? A report compiled by a House of Representatives panel earlier this year found that government spending on contracts rose by 103% between 2000 and 2005.

Should you be discouraged if a career you pinned your hopes on is not expected to grow? Not at all, says Anthony Spadafore, director of Pathfinders, a career counseling company in Alexandria, Va. He says that if people pursue their fields that play to their talents, they'll be able to compete for the top jobs where competition is fierce, even if the industry is diminishing.

"The idea of shrinking and hot fields, we think it's sort of a rudimentary way of looking at things," Spadafore says. "Believe it or not, there's still a need for bank tellers."

Want more info? The Department of Labor has some excellent information, including the bi-annual Occupational Outlook Handbook, which includes career descriptions, salary information, employment projections and working conditions for hundreds of jobs. (The next version is due out early next year.) Another good resource is the Occupational Outlook Quarterly, which profiles specific careers. Last year, the publication issued an entire volume related to growth projections.

Japanese traditional therapy, honokiol, blocks key protein in inflammatory brain damage, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Mar. 19, 2012) ? Microglia are the first line defence of the brain and are constantly looking for infections to fight off. Overactive microglia can cause uncontrolled inflammation within the brain, which can in turn lead to neuronal damage. New research published in BioMed Central?s open access journal Journal of Neuroinflammation shows that, honokiol (HNK) is able to down-regulate the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and inflammatory enzymes in activated microglia via Klf4, a protein known to regulate DNA.

Scientists from the National Brain Research Centre, Manesar, India, used lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a molecule present on the surface of bacteria, to stimulate an immune response from microglia cells. LPS mimics the effect of a bacterial infection and the microglia cells spring into action, releasing proinflammatory cytokines, such as TNFa.

Activation of microglia also stimulates the production of nitric oxide (NO) and Cox-2, which co-ordinate the immune response, leading to inflammation. However uncontrolled inflammation can lead to neuronal death and? permanent brain damage. Microglial inflammation is also observed in several neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer?s disease, Parkinson?s disease, and multiple sclerosis.

The team led by Dr Anirban Basu found that the inflammatory response was mediated by Klf4, a ?transcription? factor which binds directly to DNA to enhance or impede gene expression. Treating microglia with HNK reduced their activation and HNK treated cells secreted less cytokines in response to LPS. HNK also down regulated the activity of Klf4 (and pNF-kb - another regulator of inflammation).

Dr Basu suggested that HNK down regulates Klf4 which in turn down regulates NO and Cox-2 production. He said, ?HNK can easily move across the blood brain barrier and we found that HNK reduced levels of pNF-kb and Klf4 as well as the number of activated microglia in the brains of LPS treated mice.?

He continued, ?Our work with HNK has found that Klf4 is an important regulator of inflammation. Both HNK and Klf4 may be important not only in regulating inflammation due to infection, but may also have applications in other diseases which affect the brain and nervous system.?
