Whether considering specific threats or the big existential picture, there is no better time to own a Mac or iOS device. Sounds nice, but is Apple security good enough for users to let down their guard? Here?s a quick look at the good and the bad inside the walled garden.

First and foremost, it bears mentioning that any computer can be hacked ? it?s merely a question of time and opportunity.

That said, TidBITS? Rich Mogull offers a very upbeat assessment of Apple security as we head into the New Year:

Apple?s security is, across the board, stronger now than at any time in the nearly eight years I?ve been researching and writing about the company?s products and services. Which is important, since Apple also faces more security challenges than at any time in its past.

The existential threat to Mac security in recent years was Java, which has been a big problem for Windows and Linux, as well. However, the issue on the Mac began to diminish after Apple handed off Java update responsibility to Oracle and, just as importantly, deprecated Java by making it optional, not part of the default OS X installation.

Further, OS X automatically deactivates Java ? no interaction required ? if it goes unused for a period of time, which is just plain smart.

Those things happened months ago, but the payoff is just becoming apparent.

Increasing popularity, smaller target

The baseline fundamentals executed by Apple that make both the Mac and iOS platforms much more secure ? apps must be sandboxed and reviewed before listing on either the Mac App Store or iOS App Store ? have been somewhat unpopular with developers. However, although app sideloading is common on both platforms, the great majority of users are getting software from official, curated channels, which greatly reduces the security exposure of Apple products.

The impressive bit here is that Apple has improved Mac and iOS security even as they?ve increased market share.

For what it?s worth, Microsoft is beginning its own effort to secure Windows inside a walled garden. However, given the hodgepodge, inconsistent approach, it?s hard to imagine Redmond will be successful at least in the short term.

Contrariwise, Google?s Android platform is ?open,? which is just another way of saying it is woefully insecure.

So, is Apple security good enough? Perhaps.

However, the real question isn?t absolute security, but rather which platform does it best? Clearly, Apple is doing a much, much better job than either Microsoft or Google?

To that end, he told the Annapolis Patch:??We?re a Christian-owned company, and we just can?t support gay marriages. We?re not trying to make a statement. We?re not trying to make a point. We?re just trying to be faithful Christians.?

He also wants his clients to side with him and lobby state lawmakers to institute an exemption for wedding vendors that would allow them to abstain from taking business due to religious beliefs. Same-sex marriage will become legal in Maryland ?in less than a week, so he?s cutting out while he can.

By walking away from the marriage business altogether, the owner is potentially avoiding discrimination lawsuits that might be brought against the company for refusing to cater to gay weddings.

?If they?re providing services to the public, they can?t discriminate who they provide their services to,? said the general counsel for the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights, according to the Baltimore Sun. That organization is the one which enforces the laws that don?t allow businesses to discriminate on the basis of ?things like race, sexual orientation, religion and more.

It?s his business, and therefore he can do what he wants, as long as he doesn?t allow anyone to use his service whatsoever. The owner said he will post a full explanation on his company website by Jan.

He did admit to Eye on Annapolis to sending an email to a potential straight client that read:??we used to do weddings until recently. But we?re a Christian-owned business, and we are not able to lend support to gay marriages. And as a public accommodation, we cannot discriminate between gay or straight couples, so we had to stop doing all wedding transportation.?

The man who?d wanted to hire the company for his heterosexual wedding replied in an email, via the Annapolis Patch:??It is your right to run your business any way you see fit, but let?s be honest here, you drive a trolley up and down a street. Not exactly God?s work.?

He?s not the only business to step away from thousands of dollars in potential wedding revenue. According to the?Maryland Wedding Professionals Association, the trolley company is the second vendor to get skittish over the same-sex marriage law.

We?ve seen discrimination accusations against other businesses elsewhere, including B&B owners in Canada who reportedly refused to rent a room to a gay couple?and were subsequently ordered to pay $4,500 to the couple to make up for it.

We forget to celebrate the enormous progress that has been made in clean coal in recent decades. The core U.S. coal statistic is this: criteria emissions from coal use in the U.S. have declined a stunning 87% since 1970, during a time when coal use has nearly tripled. ?Smokestacks? for coal plants have now become steam stacks, thanks to wet and dry ESPs, baghouses, low-NOx burners, SCRs, activated carbon injection and a host of other technologies.

In addition, using coal in large centralized plants dramatically reduces the burning of fuel wood and waste that causes enormous indoor air pollution in developing nations. And we know that low-cost coal-fueled electricity has helped to bring about an explosion of electrotechnologies: your coal-fueled mail delivery ? e-mail ? has dramatically lower emissions than traditional mail.

New supercritical coal plants represent another leap forward. Consider the Prairie State Energy Campus, with more than $1 billion in clean coal technologies and criteria emissions some 80% below the existing coal fleet? along with a carbon dioxide emission rate some 40% below existing plants. Prairie State is also a great example of green jobs, with thousands of workers involved in construction of the large coal plant. And Prairie State has a cost of fuel that less than one-third that of even currently suppressed U.S. natural gas prices.

Ironically, U.S. environmentalists have been a major reason more supercritical coal plants haven?t been used in the United States, even taking credit for killing state-of-the-art new coal construction in the past decade. China is building far more such plants because they recognize that coal is essential to power a healthy economy and the new generation of coal plants offer great environmental advantage. Also, Peabody is proud to be the only non-Chinese partner in GreenGen, which just started up in Tianjin, China, as a major coal gasification plant that will ultimately reuse carbon dioxide for enhanced oil recovery.

Coal has been the fastest growing fuel in the world for the past decade, and has been projected to pass oil as the world?s largest energy source next year. Its abundance and low-cost profile make coal essential for powering the world?s best economies and helping to move hundreds of millions of people to cities? and to the middle class. Those are enormous societal benefits, and technology can ensure that his be done in an environmentally friendly way.

David Hawkins:

Vic?s message is rife with omissions and evasions. His complaint about the untold story of improved emissions from coal plants is ironic, given the parts he chooses to leave untold: that coal producers and coal plant operators fought every single one of the policies that produced these gains; that they continue to fight the policies that could produce similar gains for carbon dioxide if adopted; and that Peabody is truly a world leader in funding the campaigns to block meaningful action against global warming pollution.

Next, he switches the subject from coal to electricity. No environmentalists I know are opposed to electrification. To conflate the benefits of electricity with the need to use coal as it is used today, is deeply dishonest.

Building new supercritical coal plants is a climate protection strategy only in Orwell?s world. Protecting the climate means curbing cumulative emissions. New supercritical coal plants are a massive commitment to increased cumulative emissions. There is no irony in the efforts to block these plants and to steer investments to cleaner forms of electricity resources.

If Peabody were serious about deployment of CCS [carbon dioxide capture and sequestration] it would have supported the Waxman-Markey bill and companion bills in the Senate. Those bills would have made huge subsidies available for CCS and would have set standards requiring its use on the new coal plants that Peabody would like to see built. CCS is not the best tool we have to protect the climate but Vic?s claim that Peabody is a serious promoter of the technology is as misleading as the rest of his message.

The daily said he had attended prayers at an ancient mosque but was later reported missing. He said he planned to walk across the desert to Timbuktu, in Mali.

He was stopped by nomad tribesmen on Christmas Day and taken to security services operating in the border area who arrested him.

Shaheen reportedly told Mauritanian Police he was trying to reach Timbuktu to join the AQIM.

Citing Mauritanian news agency Sahara Media, the daily said jihadists from various countries, including instructors from Pakistan, have been flocking to Mali to fill the ranks of AQIM ahead of an armed assault by a UN-backed multi-national force to oust the militants.

The Islamists took control of Timbuktu in April after a military coup left Mali's army in disarray.

US military blames many Afghan insider attacks on personal causes

The Taliban has billed a rash of insider attacks targeting international troops in Afghanistan as an effective battlefield strategy, but detailed data disclosed recently by the U.S. military suggest that the largest percentage of such incidents probably stemmed from personal motives rather than enemy infiltration.

Of the 79 insider attacks from May 2007 to September 2012, military investigators found that 38 percent were likely to have been triggered by personal motives; 6 percent were suspected cases of enemy infiltration; and 14 percent were attributed to co-option, in which insurgents persuaded a member of the security forces to help carry out an attack. The cause of 38 percent of the cases was unknown or still under investigation.

The data on attacks by Afghan security personnel or military interpreters were included in a Pentagon report to Congress on operations in Afghanistan that was released last week.

After a sharp uptick in the number of "green on blue" attacks in the summer, the U.S. military temporarily suspended joint patrols. At least 116 NATO troops have been killed in insider attacks since 2007, including 51 this year.

U.S. officials say they remain focused on enhancing training and security procedures to mitigate what they see as an enduring threat. As of Oct. 13, insider attacks accounted for 21 percent of NATO combat deaths in Afghanistan this year, an all-time high since the military started tracking such incidents in 2007.

"I would be very loath to say that it's a problem that's been solved," a senior defense official said last week, briefing journalists on the Report on Progress Toward Security and Stability in Afghanistan, which is issued twice a year. "It's a problem we will continue to address."

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity per department protocol, said that regardless of the motive behind insider attacks, "they were all used by the Taliban as part of their narrative."

The U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan has developed several initiatives to combat the threat, increased its emphasis on cultural sensitivity and established a "guardian angel" system in which designated American troops watch over their comrades during meetings and patrols with Afghans.

An Oct. 12 Army draft handbook on the insider threat in Afghanistan summarized a handful of cases in which Afghans opened fire on their foreign allies, providing a rare window into the kind of situations that sparked attacks. The draft said many altercations occurred because foreign troops "lack empathy for Muslims and/or cultural norms, resulting in a violent reaction" from Afghan troops.

One of the shootings cited occurred during an argument over the propriety of smoking during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan, according to the draft manual, which was obtained by The Washington Post. While waiting outside a meeting of U.S. and Afghan security leaders, an American soldier asked an Afghan for a lighter so he could smoke.

"The [Afghan soldier] refused and rebuffed the U.S. service member for wanting to smoke during Ramadan," a period in which Muslims fast and refrain from smoking during daylight hours, according to the draft. "The U.S. service member cursed the [Afghan soldier] and disparaged his religious beliefs," the report said. As the argument escalated, the Afghan raised his weapon. Both the Afghan and the American fired shots, and both were wounded.

The 75-page manual, which the U.S.-led command in Afghanistan has not adopted or endorsed, contains several recommendations, including that foreign and Afghan troops should avoid discussion of religion, women, sex and human rights. The authors of the draft, which was disclosed by The Wall Street Journal, also suggested that female foreign troops avoid wearing shorts around Afghan men.

Ahmad Shuja, an Afghan writer and analyst who heads the Washington-based Foundation for Afghanistan, said leaders of the U.S.-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan have done a good job of understanding and explaining the cultural differences that have created friction.

"That's the easy part," Shuja said. "The hard part is translating that knowledge down to the fighting unit: changing ISAF soldiers' behavior and changing how an Afghan soldier perceives a cultural faux pas."

For climate geek and political hopeful Andrew Weaver, it was a controversial week. The University of Victoria scientist, who recently announced he would vie for the riding of Oak Bay-Gordon Head as a BC Green party candidate in the May 2013 election, tweeted Wednesday night that a friend and former federal NDP candidate asked him to drop out of the provincial election race.

Weaver claimed Michael Byers called him up in the fall and urged him to step aside, and talked about the NDP potentially offering him the deputy minister of environment position. For his part, Byers has said the phone call was between friends. He told the CBC the idea he would be asked to call Weaver on behalf of BC NDP leader Adrian Dix was "ludicrous," and on Thursday, in a recorded message played on CKNW's Bill Good Show, said he was "very disappointed (Weaver) is actually lying" about the content of their conversation.

On the show, Good asked Weaver to clarify his remarks about Byers' offer of incentives. "So he didn't offer you a deputy minister's position?"

Weaver responded, "No, he couldn't offer that... the term deputy minister was dangled as one of a... number of ways that one could influence, still have influence in the actual government direction of policy."

In an email to The Tyee, Weaver said he hasn't suggested that Byers was acting in any official capacity for the BC NDP.

"It was a phone call from a friend who is well-connected in the party and who?suggested that there may be other opportunities to affect policy in the government should I be willing to step down from my campaign," he wrote.

"Whether or not Michael and I will be friends as this story fades away, I am confident we both want nothing but the best for B.C."

Columnists wonder whether the story will fade, and what impact it has on Weaver's race -- an issue the Vancouver Sun's Craig McInnes recently weighed in detail.

If Weaver does win, he'll leave behind his comfy Canada Research Chair at UVic for a sturdy seat in the legislature. He's been considered a star candidate for the Greens since it was announced in September. As party leader Jane Sterk put it then, "Andrew's candidacy changes politics in B.C."

A win for Weaver would also change the political climate of the island riding of Oak Bay-Gordon Head. A home for high numbers of seniors and students, it's been a Liberal stronghold since incumbent Ida Chong took office in 1996.

The Tyee spoke with Weaver before Wednesday's "tempest in an Oak Bay teacup" -- credit to MLA John Horgan and his quick Twitter wit for that one -- for more on his background and platform. Here's what he had to say.

On the Green groundswell and finally saying yes to Jane Sterk:

"It's the perfect storm. We have Elizabeth May, who won in Saanich Gulf Islands. We had the federal byelection here that was nearly won by the Greens. There's a willingness for change in the way government operates.

"For years and years I'd been asked by numerous parties, both at the provincial and the federal level, if I'd consider running and I've said no always. And I actually said no to Jane Sterk at least three times. And then I finally thought, you know what? Maybe I will.

"I think that people in Oak Bay-Gordon Head want change. You know, Ida's (Liberal incumbent Ida Chong) done a good job for the constituents. She's been here a long time. She's worked hard. But it's not a career, and I think the residents of Oak Bay-Gordon Head would like to see change. I've seen lots of that sentiment expressed to me, that people want change -- and I don't think they want the NDP candidate to represent that change."

On not being your typical Big Bang Theory scientist:

"When I was a little kid I was always good at math and I always loved science. So you tend to kind of bumble your way through school following what you're good at and what you like.... I loved the ocean, I lived by the ocean. I asked Santa Claus for books about the ocean. When I was just a little kid I loved Jacques Cousteau. I would watch it every time it came on.

"I played in high school on the rugby team and the chess team. You know, that's kind of weird. So you're playing on the one hand on the rugby team and then you go to a chess tournament. I wasn't your stereotypical Big Bang guy. I liked to be able to relate my science to the people that I hung out with, which typically were, you know, just regular people."

On getting rid of the stink, and other hot riding issues:

"A very big issue locally is the issue of what to do with the storm drains and sewage systems in Oak Bay. In Oak Bay, large parts of the uplands have the storm drain systems hooked in with the sewage systems, so that in big rainfalls you get raw sewage dumping on our local beaches. That's a big problem.

"(Oak Bay-Gordon Head) has four high schools in the region, and it has numerous elementary schools as well. It has a university (too). Education is a paramount interest to this riding. If you look at the demographics, people who live in this riding have a strong background in education as well.

"Of course, health care is always a concern because Victoria is a retirement destination. It always has been, it always will be, and so seniors' health care is important, and the civility of the health care system is crucial too."

On how B.C.'s current reliance on the gas glut is unwise:

"We have what I would argue is a completely misplaced, ill-posed, and a poorly thought-out economic trajectory for the province put forward by both the Liberals and the NDP, and that is a reliance on royalties coming from natural gas through enhanced fracking in northeastern B.C. We just have to look at the collapse of the natural gas market and the royalties accordingly to see why we're in the budgetary crisis we're in now.

"It's because everybody in the world discovered fracking, and as a consequence there's a natural gas glut in the market because prices are dropping.... You do not want to fund social programs on unsustainable economies, which are exclusively through royalties on a product that's crashing."

On the furor over his Alberta oil sands paper that found coal is actually a worse threat:

"When people stand up and say the tar sands is game over for planet earth if we burn them, well that's rhetoric. There are a lot of really serious problems in terms of global warming, really serious problems.... However, it's better to use evidence because if you start to say things that aren't factually correct you're easy to be dismissed.

"Ninety per cent of people recognized the discourse for what it was -- informing public policy. Five per cent on either side went nuts. The advocates in the tar sands industry and some of the die-hards in the Conservative government started to selectively quote bits to say, tar sands are no big problem. And on the other hand, you had some of the more extreme environmental people saying that we were undermining all of their efforts. Of course, neither of them were correct."

On putting the science back in political decision-making:

"Science is: I see something and develop a theory that explains all known observations about that theory, and then I use that theory to make a prediction. Ideology is: I have an answer, now what I'm going to find that information that supports my answer and selectively ignore everything else and then try to market that answer to other people.

"That's a very different way of looking at things. So for example, prior to the formulation of policy (and this is why I like the Green Party of B.C.), it's really important to seek information and input, because you can't formulate good policy without seeking input and evidence to support policy. Citizen engagement is a crucial component to the Green Party of B.C. platform and it's something I resonate with as a scientist, because I'm seeking data and information before I make decisions."

2 funerals begin a sad procession in Conn.

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? Opening a long and almost unbearable procession of grief, Newtown began laying its dead to rest Monday, holding funerals for two 6-year-old boys ? one a football fan who was buried in a New York Giants jersey and one whose twin sister survived the school shooting rampage.

Two funeral homes filled with mourners for Noah Pozner and Jack Pinto, the first of the 20 children killed in last week's massacre to receive funerals. The gunman also killed six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary, and his mother in her home, before committing suicide.

A rabbi presided at Noah's service, and in keeping with Jewish tradition, the boy was laid to rest in a simple brown wooden casket with a Star of David on it.

"If Noah had not been taken from us, he would have become a great man. He would been a wonderful husband and a loving father," Noah's uncle, Alexis Haller, told mourners, according to remarks he provided to The Associated Press. Both services were closed to the news media.

Noah's twin, Arielle, who was assigned to a different classroom, survived the killing frenzy by 20-year-old Adam Lanza, an attack so horrifying that authorities could not say three days later whether the school would ever reopen.

Newtown, a community of 27,000 people 60 miles northeast of New York City, will face many more funerals over the next few days, just as other towns are getting ready for the holidays.

"I feel like we have to get back to normal, but I don't know if there is normal anymore," said Kim Camputo, mother of two children, 5 and 10, who attend a different school. "I'll definitely be dropping them off and picking them up myself for a while."

Beyond Newtown, parents nervously sent their children back to class in a country deeply shaken by the attack, and in a measure of how the tragedy has put people on edge, schools were locked down in at least four places.

As investigators worked to figure out what drove Lanza to lash out with such fury ? and why he singled out the school ? federal agents said he had fired guns at shooting ranges over the past several years but there was no evidence he did so recently as practice for the rampage.

At Jack's Christian service, hymns rang out from inside the funeral home, where the boy lay in an open casket in the Giants' star wide receiver Victor Cruz's No. 80 jersey. Jack was among the youngest members of a youth wrestling association in Newtown, and dozens of little boys turned up at the service in gray Newtown Wrestling T-shirts.

Ten-year-old Luke Wellman remembered a boy who loved football and wrestling and worshipped Cruz, who played in Sunday's game with "Jack Pinto 'My Hero'" written on one of his cleats.

Luke said: "I'm here to support my teammate and friend."

A mourner, Gwendolyn Glover, said the service carried a message of comfort and protection, particularly for other children. "The message was: You're secure now. The worst is over," she said.

At Noah's funeral, the boy was described a smart, funny and mischievous child who loved animals, Mario Brothers video games and tacos.

"I will miss your forceful and purposeful little steps stomping through our house. I will miss your perpetual smile, the twinkle in your dark blue eyes, framed by eyelashes that would be the envy of any lady in this room," his mother, Veronique Pozner, told mourners, according to Haller.

"Most of all, I will miss your visions of your future. You wanted to be a doctor, a soldier, a taco factory manager. It was your favorite food, and no doubt you wanted to ensure that the world kept producing tacos," she said, evoking laughter from the crowd.

She closed by saying: "Momma loves you, little man."

At both funeral homes, as around the country, people wrestled with what steps could and should be taken to prevent something like the massacre from happening again.

"If people want to go hunting, a single-shot rifle does the job, and that does the job to protect your home, too. If you need more than that, I don't know what to say," Ray DiStephan said outside Noah's funeral.

He added: "I don't want to see my kids go to schools that become maximum-security fortresses. That's not the world I want to live in, and that's not the world I want to raise them in."

Around the country, school systems asked police departments to increase patrols Monday and sent messages to parents outlining safety procedures. Teachers steeled themselves for their students' questions and fears.

Richard Cantlupe, an American history teacher at Westglades Middle School in Parkland, Fla., described the Connecticut rampage as "our 9/11 for schoolteachers."

Anxiety ran high enough in Ridgefield, about 20 miles from Newtown, that officials ordered a lockdown at schools after a person deemed suspicious was seen at a train station. Two schools were locked down in South Burlington, Vt., because of an unspecified threat.

Three schools in the Tampa, Fla., area did the same after a bullet was found on the floor of a school bus, and a New Hampshire high school went into emergency mode after an administrator heard a loud bang. A police search found nothing suspicious.

Meanwhile, the outlines of a national debate on gun control began to take shape. At the White House, spokesman Jay Carney said curbing gun violence is a complex problem that will require a "comprehensive solution."

Carney did not offer specific proposals or a timeline. He said President Barack Obama will meet with law enforcement officials and mental health professionals in coming weeks.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, flanked by shooting survivors and relatives of victims of gunfire around the country, pressed Obama and Congress to toughen gun laws and tighten enforcement after the Newtown massacre.

"If this doesn't do it," he asked, "what is going to?"

But Texas Gov. Rick Perry indicated Monday that he supported allowing teachers and administrators to carry concealed handguns. Local school districts should decide their own policies, Perry said.

Lanza is believed to have used a Bushmaster AR-15-style rifle, a civilian version of the military's M-16. It is similar to the weapon used in a recent shopping mall shooting in Oregon and other deadly attacks around the U.S. Versions of the AR-15 were outlawed in this country under the 1994 assault weapons ban, but the law expired in 2004.

At least one senator, Virginia Democrat Mark Warner, said Monday that the attack in Newtown has led him to rethink his opposition to the ban on assault weapons.

West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, a Democrat who is an avid hunter and lifelong member of the National Rifle Association, said it's time to move beyond the political rhetoric and begin an honest discussion about reasonable restrictions on guns.

"This is bigger than just about guns," he added. "It's about how we treat people with mental illness, how we intervene, how we get them the care they need, how we protect our schools. It's just so sad."

Authorities say Lanza shot his mother, Nancy Lanza, at their home and then took her car and some of her guns to the school, where he broke in and opened fire. A Connecticut official said the mother, a gun enthusiast who practiced at shooting ranges, was found dead in her pajamas in bed, shot four times in the head with a .22-caliber rifle.

Lanza was wearing all black, with an olive-drab utility vest with lots of pockets, during the attack.

Investigators have found no letters or diaries that could explain the rampage.

Debora Seifert, a spokeswoman for the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said both Lanza and his mother fired at shooting ranges, and also visited ranges together.

"We do not have any indication at this time that the shooter engaged in shooting activities in the past six months," Seifert told the AP.

In Newtown, classes were canceled Monday, and the town's other schools were to reopen Tuesday. The district made plans to send surviving Sandy Hook students to a former middle school in the neighboring town of Monroe.

Sandy Hook desks are being taken to the Chalk Hill school in Monroe, empty since town schools consolidated last year, and tradesmen are donating their services to get the school ready within a matter of days.

"These are innocent children that need to be put on the right path again," Monroe police Lt. Brian McCauley said.

With Sandy Hook Elementary still designated a crime scene, state police Lt. Paul Vance said it could be months before police turn the school back over to the district. The people of Newtown were not ready to address its future.

"We're just now getting ready to talk to our son about who was killed," said Robert Licata, the father of a student who escaped harm during the shooting. "He's not even there yet."

The Steelers got the ball first in overtime in Dallas, but they didn?t hold onto it long.

Cowboys cornerback Brandon Carr stepped in front of a Ben Roethlisberger pass on the second play of overtime and returned it to the one-yard line. The Cowboys moved the ball into the middle of the field and let Dan Bailey kick a 20-yard field goal to win the game 27-24 and make the NFC East even knottier with two weeks to play.

The Redskins won and the Giants lost, leaving all three teams with 8-6 records heading into Week 15. With a Week 17 date with the Redskins and a tiebreaker edge on the Giants, the Cowboys can win the division if they win their last two games. Not a bad time to put together your first three-game win streak of the season.

Things looked like they were going to go against the Cowboys when they were down 24-17 in the fourth quarter and had a drive stall. Antonio Brown fumbled at the end of his punt return, though, and the Cowboys tied the game with their second life. After a strange end of game sequence that saw the Cowboys seem to flirt with a 62-yard field goal (or perhaps just force the Steelers to take a timeout) and the Steelers opt to take a knee at their own 20 with 25 seconds and one timeout left, the game went to overtime and Carr made the kind of play that the Cowboys brought him to Dallas to make.

It was the end of a good day for a battered Cowboys defense. They lost linebacker Ernie Sims to a concussion and DeMarcus Ware was clearly less than 100 percent, but they came up with big sacks to end a pair of late Steelers drives and, of course, came up with the big play in overtime.

Roethlisberger wound up 24-of-40 for 339 yards and two touchdowns on the game, numbers that Tony Romo bettered. He was 30-of-42 for 341 yards and two scores, including a 24-yard strike to Dez Bryant that ended a third quarter drive that saw Romo go 7-for-7 for 89 yards. DeMarco Murray chipped in 81 rushing yards and a touchdown, balancing out a fumble near the Steeler end zone in the first half, and Dez Bryant managed four catches for 59 yards despite a finger injury that was definitely limiting him.

The Steelers running game never got going Sunday and the Cowboys were able to find mismatches in the passing game all day, which helped the Steelers to a second straight loss and clinched a playoff berth for the Ravens. At 7-7, the Steelers are now a game behind the Bengals in the fight for a Wild Card spot as the teams prepare to play at Heinz Field next weekend. It goes without saying that making the playoffs isn?t going to happen if the Steelers lose that one too.

Hillary Clinton faints, suffers a concussion

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reportedly fainted from being dehydrated and suffered an apparent concussion in the incident. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

Updated at 4:10 p.m. ET: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton fainted days ago and suffered a concussion after becoming dehydrated because of a stomach virus, the State Department said Saturday.

"She has been recovering at home and will continue to be monitored regularly by her doctors. At their recommendation, she will continue to work from home next week, staying in regular contact with Department and other officials," the State Department said in a statement.

State Department officials said Clinton, 65, fainted earlier this week, although they would not specify when the incident occurred.

NBC?s chief medical editor Dr. Nancy Snyderman said Clinton?s exhausting schedule could have made her susceptible to fainting. Clinton is known for her grueling travel schedule and has earned the distinction of being the secretary of state who has traveled the most.

?If a patient has been logging millions of miles a year and is tired and not eating or drinking the right things in a couple of days, a shift in blood volume can cause fainting,? Snyderman said.

This isn?t the first time Clinton passed out after having a stomach bug. As a U.S. senator representing New York, Clinton fainted in 2005 during a speech in Buffalo after complaining of a stomach virus.

A history of fainting could indicate underlying heart problems, Snyderman said, specifically ?that the heart is not pumping correctly.?

?Heart valve or thyroid issues can be more common in older women,? Snyderman explained. ?The standard protocol would be to have a cardiac workout to make sure her heart rhythm and heart valves are normal. You worry about the heart not beating correctly. That?s a very simple thing to check.?

She said that given Clinton?s past fainting episode, her doctors would likely put her through a cardiac stress test.

The concussion will have doctors ?watching her like a hawk,? Snyderman said, particularly if Clinton hit the side of her head. If Clinton hit the back of her head, her brain would be better protected, she said.

Clinton canceled a trip to Morocco earlier in the week because she wasn't feeling well, according to New York Magazine. She was scheduled to be in Morocco to officially recognize the Syrian rebels who have been engaged for nearly two years in an armed battle against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad?s regime.

Due to her health, Clinton will no longer testify at a?House Foreign Affairs Committee on Thursday?on the attack on a U.S. mission in Libya.

"I am sorry to learn of Secretary Clinton's ill health and I wish her a quick and full recovery. It is, however, unfortunate that Secretary Clinton is unable to testify next week before the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on the investigation into the terrorist attack that killed four Americans and left others injured," committee chairwoman?Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., said in a statement.

Deputy Secretary William Burns and Deputy Secretary Thomas Nides will provide testimony in Clinton's absence.

"Although I respect Bill and Tom, we still don't have information from the Obama administration on what went so tragically wrong in Benghazi that resulted in the deaths of four patriotic Americans," Ros-Lehtinen said. "We have been combing through classified and unclassified documents and have tough questions about State Department threat assessments and decision-making on Benghazi. This requires a public appearance by the secretary of state herself. Other cabinet secretaries involved should also be held publicly accountable."

Goldman Sachs M&A head says he had no role in Dragon deal

BOSTON (Reuters) - The head of Goldman Sachs Group Inc's mergers and acquisition business denied that he had any role in the 2000 sale of voice recognition software company Dragon Systems to a buyer that collapsed soon afterward.

Dragon's founders have sued Goldman, accusing the Wall Street bank of failing them by advising them to pursue the $580 million all-stock sale to Lernout & Haupsie shortly before the Belgian software company went bankrupt in an accounting scandal.

Gene Sykes, who has spent his entire banking career at Goldman and now runs its M&A business, denied in video testimony played in U.S. District Court in Boston on Friday that he had worked on that deal.

"I am pretty certain I had no involvement, but I also was involved in many transactions and had a lot of people involved in a lot of transactions," Sykes said in a video deposition recorded in December 2011.

While Sykes has spent most of his career in Goldman's M&A operation, during the time of the Dragon deal, he was working at its principal investment area, the department that invests the company's own money.

Janet and James Baker, who founded Dragon and owned 51 percent of it, said they had lost their life's work after they sold the company. They had only sold a few million dollars worth of the stock they had received before L&H's collapse wiped out the value of their remaining shares.

The Bakers and two other early Dragon employees have sued Goldman for several hundred million dollars.

Goldman lawyers have argued that the Bakers hired the bank to structure a deal with L&H, not to investigate it for accounting fraud. They have said that Goldman advised Dragon to hire an accountant to analyze the buyer's stability.

Goldman denied civil claims that include gross negligence and breach of fiduciary duty. The jury trial, which began on Monday, is expected to last two months.

TECH BUBBLE

The deal, and L&H's collapse, came around the end of the technology stock bubble of the late 1990s, a time when investors had been eagerly chasing new and sometimes poorly managed Internet companies.

Sykes, who today has a seat on Goldman's powerful 28-member management committee, said he had been unaware of the specifics of L&H's collapse prior to being called to testify.

"I can't recall that I ever became aware of it independently of hearing that I was going to be deposed in this case," Sykes said, adding that he knew the name was "a newsworthy item at some point years ago" but had not recalled specifics.

Dressed in a tie and white shirt, with his jacket over the back of his chair, Sykes said his role was to advise clients and negotiate deals, but that clients make their own decisions.

"I make sure I try to give them the right advice so that they can make good decisions about the various options they have," Sykes said.

One of the four Goldman bankers who advised Dragon on the deal said in early court testimony that he had reported to Sykes.

Goldman's reputation has been tarnished in recent years by allegations that the company has treated clients shabbily. Earlier this year, one executive leaving the bank published a resignation letter calling the bank a "toxic" place where managing directors referred to their clients as "muppets."

The bank has said that employee performed poorly and left after demanding a raise and promotion that he was denied.

Nuance Communications Inc now owns the Dragon software.

NASA's Voyager 1 hits a 'magnetic highway' out of the solar system

Scientists at NASA say the unmanned Voyager 1 spacecraft has reached the edges of the solar system. They estimate in a few months to a year Voyager 1 will become the first manmade object to leave the solar system and enter interstellar space.

The probe, launched 35 years ago to study the outer planets, is now about 11 billion miles from Earth. At that distance, it takes radio signals traveling at the speed of light 17 hours to reach Earth. Light moves at 186,000 miles per second.

Voyager?1 will be the first manmade object to leave the solar system.

Scientists believe?Voyager?1 is in an area where the magnetic field lines from the sun are connecting with magnetic field lines from interstellar space. The phenomenon is causing highly energetic particles from distant supernova explosions and other cosmic events to zoom inside the solar system, while less-energetic solar particles exit.

"It's like a highway, letting particles in and out," lead?Voyager?scientist?Ed Stone?told reporters at an American Geophysical Union conference in?San Francisco.

Scientists don't know how long it will take for the probe to cross the so-called "magnetic highway," but they believe it is the last layer of a complex boundary between the region of space under the sun's influence and interstellar space.

"Our best guess is it's likely just a few months to a couple years away," Stone said.

Voyager?1 hit the outer sphere of the solar system, a region called the heliosphere, in 2004 and passed into the heliosheath, where the supersonic stream of particles from the sun - the so-called "solar wind" - slowed down and became turbulent.

This tale of Chanukah celebrations, holiday dysfunction and the miracle of a certain soaring potato pancake should be a fun family event. Adapted by Yorinks from his classic children?s book, The Flying Latke tells the story of young Danny Silverstein and his ?meshugge? family as they celebrate the first night of Chanukah. Their holiday food fight sends a latke sailing out the window and over the city, causing a UFO frenzy that traps the Silversteins in their home with their home with their extended family visiting and nothing but latkes to eat. Set just before the holidays on a snowy winter day, Seven in One Blow, or the Brave Little Kid tells the story of a child living in the city who kills seven flies with a single swat and makes a belt emblazoned with ?Seven in One Blow? to commemorate the event. The Kid travels through the snow and meets numerous colorful characters along the way, including the Scarlet Pimpernel, a Pea, December, a Witch, an Ogre and a Princess. Most people think this belt refers to seven people and assign the Kid all kinds of difficult tasks based on this faulty presumption. Over the course of the take, invaluable lessons are learned: an Ogre finds that you don?t always have to show how strong you are to be strong; a girl realizes that when you tease someone, you may be hurting a person who is just like you; and a scary monster understands that because she is loved, she may not be so scary after all. In the end, after a surprise twist, the Kid discovers that a parent?s love and care has no limits.

Radio City Christmas Spectacular
This show is quite simply dazzling complete with gorgeous trees, ornamental chandeliers and the friendliest staff you have ever met. The Rockettes are incredible to watch as they dance and move their magical gams. The costumes are also amazing as well as the festive music. This show also features an amazing digital backdrop where they switch from grand manor to the streets of New York City. We were totally entertained. Yes, the show is somewhat nostalgic and sentimental, and a bit kitschy at times, but it is rich in entertainment, excellent choreography (I always love that Tin Solider piece) and thrill.

The precision-built model of the Brooklyn-built USS Monitor in our exhibit serves as the inspiration for the gingerbread model that participants will help to assemble, decorate and ?commission? here in our atrium.
